Creating a Clay Whistle

( 22:31 )

Luis Perez, educator, ceramist, and musician will introduce the construction of clay whistles related to Mesoamerican cultures while showing part of his personal collection of whistles. He shows the tools used for construction of clay musical instruments and illustrates the different possibilities and configurations starting from a “basic form.” He explains the basic principles of sound and the symmetry and asymmetry applied to the making of finger holes for sound production. He then demonstrates how to make a clay whistle, step-by-step, and the construction methods. He names the parts in a whistle, shows the making of an acoustic chamber, creating the aperture for sound, creating the beveled edge, creating the mouthpiece, making the air duct and the finger holes.Showing finished whistles, he explains the zoomorphic and anthropomorphic sculpture, the paint brush used to apply the color oxides, and the fine line finger design.
